Gum Disease | Gum Disease Treatment
Periodontal or gum disease is the most common oral problem among adults in United States. Periodontal disease varies from simple gum inflammation to a serious state that can cause major damage to the bone and the soft tissues that support the teeth. In late stages of the disease, it can lead to teeth loss (Cosmetic Dentistry Page).
What May Cause Gum Disease?
There are many bacteria living in our mouth along with mucus and other particles. They can form sticky and colorless “plaque” on teeth. Frequent brushing (Teeth Brushing Mastering Tips Page) and flossing (Dental Flossing Mastering Instructions Page) can prevent formation of plaque on teeth. When plaque is not removed, it forms a calcified hard surface called tarter on the teeth that cannot be remove easily, requiring a cleaning by dental professionals (Visit Your Dentist Regularly, and Not Just for Cleanings! Page) such as the ones at West LA Dental (Welcome to West LA Dental Care Page).
Gingivitis
The longer the plaque stays on the teeth surface, the higher the chance of developing long term problems. The bacteria that form plaque (Dental plaque Page) causes gum disease (Gum Disease | Gum Disease Treatment Page) and inflammation called “gingivitis”. Gingivitis causes gums to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning (Dental Cleaning & Regular Check-ups Page) by a dentist or dental hygienist. This form of gum disease does not include any loss of bone and tissue that hold the teeth in place.
Periodontitis
If you do not cure gingivitis, it can lead to periodontists. At this level, gums pull away from the teeth and form spaces called “pockets” that become infected. The body’s immune system fights against bacteria as it spreads and grows below the gum line causing inflammation and redness. If periodontists is not treated, the bones, gums and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed which can ultimately lead to teeth loss (Missing Teeth? Potential Risks In Gum Disease:
Smoking
Smoking is one of the leading factors in developing gum disease. The specific reasons for this are still not known. Additionally, smoking can lower the chances for successful treatment.
Hormonal Balances
In girls and women, these hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive and make it easier for gingivitis to occur. Some women who are pregnant develop severe gingivitis and spontaneous bleeding of gums.
Diabetes
People who suffer from diabetes are at higher risk for developing infections, including gum disease.
Medication
Some medicines can cause abnormal overgrowth of the gum tissue; this can make it difficult to keep teeth and gums clean.
Role of Genetic
Genetics also factor into how prone people are to developing gum disease.
